Hospital Transfers & Doctors
You mean I don’t need a doctor for my pregnancy and birth?
Well, if you are a healthy woman, that is very unlikely. NOVA Natural Birth Center midwives are autonomous primary maternity care providers and will give you all the care needed throughout your pregnancy, birth and through 6 weeks after unless you need medication or develop a risky condition. In that case, our friendly doctors can see you for these things.
You probably know that most doctors are not so thrilled about you having your baby out of the hospital or making choices that are unfamiliar to them. I understand! They see all the complications that can happen when a mother is not low risk. She may have diabetes, high blood pressure or she might have a diet that lacks the important things to build a healthy baby. It is easier for doctors, too, when they can do the same procedures for everyone, so they feel uncomfortable when someone does it differently.
On the other hand, our midwives get to see normal healthy births and babies all the time. Complications are very rare.
Thankfully, at NOVA Natural Birth Center, we do have doctors who are kind and respectful to you and your midwife. They understand that even healthy women may need a prescription for medication or care that is only available by a doctor or at a hospital.
So, having my baby at a birth center sounds great, but “what if something goes wrong?”
Most births go just fine. After all, birth is a normal life event, but just as we need hospitals for other emergencies, they are an important extension of our care when needed. Birth is as safe as life gets, driving a car is more dangerous, but birth can have unexpected casualties as well. Thankfully, birth emergencies are rare and most will give us a heads up something isn’t right.
Your midwife is the lifeguard, keeping an eye on you, watching for concerning signs and will get EMS on the way before it happens. Your birth team use medications, IV’s, oxygen and are certified neonatal resuscitation providers who give immediate emergency care until the ambulance arrives.
If we do end up transferring to the hospital, whether by choice or because of a complication, your midwife will stay with you until you decide together it was time for her to go home. NOVA Natural Birth Center will continue to care for you and your baby after you go home just as if you had your baby at home or at the birth center. You will still have the guiding hand of your midwife, you just had your baby at the hospital instead of at home or the birth center.
Our local EMS units visit the birth center periodically for an orientation and to learn more about midwifery care and out of hospital maternity and newborn care.
We have transferred to most of the hospitals in the area including Inova Fair Oaks, Inova Fairfax, Inova Loudoun, Reston Hospital, Virginia Hospital Center, George Washington, Mary Washington, Novant Health Prince William, Fauquier Hospital and Winchester Medical Center. We are fortunate to have so many excellent hospitals and doctors close by.
